Bullseye Presents Conversations: Architectural Responses to Place

I always find the most wonderful things when I do video searches at Vimeo.  Today I am sharing a perfect example of a wonderful find.

Bullseye presents Conversations: Architectural Responses to PlaceOctober 31 – December 22, 2012Two trained architects, one living in Montana and the other in Scotland, investigate the meaning of “place” in a duo exhibition of sculpture and collaborative installation.

Karlyn Sutherland, Harbour House, Lybster: Series 1, 2010

Richard Parrish & Karlyn Sutherland: Conversations from Bullseye Glass on Vimeo.

Well, I loved the video and hopped on over to the Bullseye website to find out more:

There is a universal desire to find, create, and discuss place. Place, differing  from space or location, is experiential and exists between the subjective and  objective realm. It is, as Gaston Bachelard explains, poetic, conflating memory,  emotion, and the senses. A new conversation about place was sparked when two architects cum artists, Richard Parrish and Karlyn Sutherland, met in the  highlands of Scotland during a residency at North Lands Creative Glass. Now an  ocean apart, in Montana and Scotland respectively, the conversation has  continued, culminating in an exhibition of kilnformed glass, drawing, and  installation. The ideas that surround place – a sense of place, a place to call home, a private place – are unexceptional but these ideas are deeply tied to our sense of self and our experience of the world, which can range from inchoate  emotion to explicit conception. There are, consequently, no definitive answers,  only conversations.

– Bullseye

Okay, raise your hand if you had to look up the word, inchoate.  I did.  Let’s just say that yours truly and this blog are inchoate.

If you are like me, and can’t get to Portland, you need to subscribe to the Bullseye email list.  Works from this exhibition will be available for viewing online when the exhibition opens.  Bullseye will send you an email when the images are available.  Besides, all you smarty pants vocabulary geniuses should be on the Bullseye email list anyway 🙂

Wall Panel Color Series By Mark Ditzler Glass Studio

Today I am looking at the Wall Panel Color Series by Mark Ditzler Glass Studio available from Artful Home.

Wall Panel Color Series Set, Mark Ditzler Glass Studio, Artfulhome.com

Wall panel color series (set of 4) in 16″ x 16″ size.  Fused glass wall panels made by Mark Ditzler Glass Studio are an exciting alternative to framed wall art. The panels are dramatic. They are composed of colorful  iridized glass, twisted glass  cane, Italian-style  Murrini and brilliantly colored  dichroic glass. Texture, color and reflection work in harmony to create a durable glass “painting” for the wall.

Beautiful! I like the color and pattern of these wall panels.  I bet they look even more amazing in person.

Chihuly Exhibition Opens at VMFA

I feel a road trip coming on.  You can bet I’ll be racking up the miles on the Looking At Glass luxury limo in the coming months.  The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) in Richmond, Virginia has a Chihuly exhibition that opened October 20th.

Dale Chihuly, Persian Ceiling

The award-winning James W. and Frances G. McGlothlin Wing will provide a dramatic setting for Chihuly at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, a major exhibition of work by internationally renowned artist Dale Chihuly. Chihuly’s art remains at the cutting edge of the technical and virtuoso possibilities of glass as a medium, and this exhibition will include many iconic works for which Chihuly is known, as well as site-specific installations, taking advantage of the soaring Atrium and reflecting pool.

The exhibition runs from October 20 through February 10, 2013.

High Point Fall Market 2012

I have an update to a blog post that was published last week, LambertsGlas at Glasstec 2012 is a Must See.  There was a lot of interest in the glass facade shipping container with glass by LambertsGlas.  I did not mention the artists responsible for the container and want to make sure they are given proper credit.  The container Art/Design is by Sandra Lange / Nils Fischer.

High Point Fall Market 2012

I made a whirlwind trip to High Point Fall Market last week and want to share with you some of what I saw.

When it comes to color, BLUES are the most popular colors being shown right now.  Green as in Lime GREEN would be the second most shown color.  I saw a lot less orange on this trip.

Finishes are still SHINY however, items with MATTE or acid etched finish are staring to show up.  I expect to see a definite trend in that direction by the time Spring Market rolls around.

Most shown glass item?  Besides mirror, glass cullet.  I saw BIG CHUNKS of glass used as art accessories in a number of showrooms.  Julian Chichester showed this type of display at Spring Market it was a big hit.  If you missed my photo from spring market, CLICK HERE.

Finally, here are my personal favorites from High Point Fall Market.

Antler Object by SkLO.  I L-O-V-E these mirrored glass antlers.

Antler, SkLO

I liked the color and matte finish of this Jamie Young, Inc. lamp.  Jamie Young had a whole line of lighting made with recycled glass.

I wish I had a clear photo to show you of the chocolate-brown mirrored glass orbs at Worldly Goods.  The color was absolutely yummy.  This was the only shot that I took and didn’t realize until after I got home that the photo was fuzzy.  Because I’d never survive as a photographer, I am including a product photo to help you out.

Silver Plated Glass Orbs by Worldly Goods, Inc.

Triumph Lamp, Viz Glass

Dale Tiffany, Inc Pendant Lights

All in all, there was still plenty of handcrafted art glass in all of the showrooms.  I hope the trend continues.  It was a quick but successful trip.  I am looking forward to Spring Market 2013!

We Are Taking A Field Trip

Today I am going to take you on a field trip.  Do kids still go on field trips?  I hope so.  I loved them when I was young.  A day away from school was like an adventure vacation.

After I mentioned my love of processes the other day, Brad Copping wrote to tell me about an article and video slideshow that he recently posted for Contemporary Canadian Glass Magazine featuring glass artist, Marc Petrovic.

AND our day gets better and better because…

IT IS FRIDAY!!!

Holy Moly, I’ve had a VERY busy week.

I started the week on Monday at the beach and had a whirlwind trip to High Point Fall Market and now a thrilling field trip.

Looks like I will be working overtime this weekend.

The Legacy Custom Glass and Steel Bed

Today I am looking at The Legacy Custom Glass and Steel Bed made by Jacob Ryder of the Saint Furniture Shop at Etsy.  I love this mod bed.  Don’t like red?  Custom Colors are available.

Saint Furniture is a collection of handmade glass and steel furniture designed and crafted in Portland, Oregon, by Jacob Ryder. Modern, minimalist, and industrial, with just a hint of gothic influence. Jacob is bringing back heirloom furniture one piece at a time.

The Legacy bed frame measures 48″ tall (headboard), 64″ across and 85″ long and it fits a queen size mattress and box spring perfectly with two different height settings for different thickness mattresses. The steel has a beautiful patina and raw steel rich aesthetic, complimented by a hot wax finish for preservation. 6 total pieces of 1 1/8″ thick pieces of kiln-cast (fused) glass are inlaid in the bed frame with three 9″ squares across the headboard and three 6″ squares on the footboard.
