Today I am looking at the Helping Angel Stained Glass Panel at the Detroit Institute of Art. The John LaFarge panel is dated 1890 and was formerly installed in the Unitarian Church, Woodward Avenue at Edmund Place, Detroit, Michigan.
UPDATE:
Thanks to Barbara Krueger for supplying additional information regarding the LaFarge window:
FYI – These windows were removed from the church back in the mid 1930’s when the major street where the church was located was widened….they were crated and taken/given to the Detroit Institute of Arts. Sometime in the mid/late 1970’s, from what I have been told, a new employee was asked to see what was in the crates….she, and others, thought they had Tiffany windows, but it took a while to find all the information to verify they were in fact by the La Farge Studio…….the windows were in need of repair/restoration and when financing was available, Mary Clerkin Higgins received the job and all the windows were shipped to her in NYC……there was a grand unveiling in early 1991.
Here is an image of the Angel at the Tomb (Crane Library in Quincy, MA) and the similarity between it and one of the DIA angels is very apparent.

An additional La Farge window from the church, entitled “The Good Knight” did not remain with the other First Unitarian windows, was sold to a private collector in Virginia, but the collector has since sold the window and it is now owned by Yale University Art Gallery. http://discover.odai.yale.edu/ydc/Record/1761353

It Is Friday!!!
Speaking of helping angels…
Helping those that are in need because of difficult circumstances is ALWAYS the right thing to do. Lending a helpful hand this week kept me busy and left me with a feeling of purpose.
Celebrate!
Today is another milestone for Looking At Glass. This post is the 600th published blog post! Isn’t that amazing? I look forward to finding and sharing another 600 posts. I hope you will continue to share and enjoy the blog.
Take time this weekend to be a helping angel and then recognize and celebrate your milestones.
I’ll be back here on Monday!
