Be Still My Hearth

Today I am looking at a glass fireplace screen.

This pocket design fireplace screen by BAAN Design of Seattle made my little heart(h) go pitter-patter.

I spotted this fireplace on Houzz and fell in love with its creative design.  The fireplace surround is made of blackened steel and the glass fireplace screen slides to open or close off the inner hearth.

Yep, this screen just got added to my Houzz Glass Ideabook!

A Pair of Reading Glasses

Today I am looking at a cute pair of reading glasses.

I hope I made you laugh.

I don’t have much else to share with you today.  I’ve spent hours searching for the right glass project to share with you.  I searched and searched and was getting really frustrated when I saw the cute reading glasses and they made me laugh.  I would much rather laugh than be frustrated so, I will stop while I am happy 🙂

Have a silly weekend and I’ll see you back here on Monday (with a real glass project!).

Romantic Shower

Today, I am looking at a Barcelona shower that I would L-O-V-E to have.  This shower belongs to Eva Palao and was featured in a blog post at Plante Deco blog, January 8, 2013.

Honestly, I think the whole bathroom is awesome.  The reflective mirror cabinets are amazing just by themselves.  But, the photographic glass shower door makes me forget to breathe.  It is the star of the room.

Lazy or Practical?

Today I am looking at the Winbot 7.

Winbot 7

Winbot 7

I’ll be honest with you, I don’t really know what to make of this robotic window and mirror cleaner.

At first, I thought it was very cool (in a geeky kind of way).  My next thought was that the Winbot 7 was very impractical.  I mean how lazy can a person be?  The video shows the Winbot 7 cleaning a bathroom mirror.  In the time it would take me to set it up, I could have cleaned the mirror.

Then, I remembered the sore shoulder that I’ve been dealing with and realized that for a person with limited mobility, this robot could really be a wonderful solution for cleaning hard-to-reach windows and glass doors.

One thing is for sure, it would drive the dogs in my house absolutely crazy!

What do you think?  Would you buy a Winbot 7?

Creative Food Truck

Today I am looking at Del Popolo food truck.

Source: ohjoy.blogs.com via Emma on Pinterest

Am I the only one that sees the humor in my looking at an awesome food truck design the day after looking at an exercise room?  I can’t help it.  I read about this food truck over at Cabbage Rose blog and I fell in love with the design.  Okay, Del Popolo’s pizza looks good but, it is the food truck design that I am in love with.

Del Popolo is a mobile pizzeria, owned by John Darsky, is committed to creating rustic Neapolitan-inspired pizza using ingredients sourced from small, generational producers.
Del Popolo is housed in a twenty-foot transatlantic shipping container that’s been re-purposed and modified into a kitchen. A wall of glass doors exposes the interior, including the traditional Italian-made wood-fired oven.

According to an article by Carolyn Alburger in Eater SF,

Instead of repurposing a taco truck or something similar, Darsky decided to deconstruct a transatlantic shipping container, then fix it to the frame of a truck for transportation. A feat of science: steel outriggers, industrial airbags, welding and 500 pound glass doors are some of the materials that McLellan Industries used to bring Darsky’s idea to life over the past 18 months.

Glam Home Gym

Today I am looking at a glam home gym.

I would bet that 95% of you have made a New Year resolution to get more exercise this year.  When I was younger this resolution never came up.  I find that the older I get, the more I make this resolution.  It is important for your health to stay fit.

My home gym is in the basement of my home.  Trust me, it doesn’t look anything like this glam home gym by Tara Dudley Interiors that I found on Houzz.

Most of the home gyms that I see have plain, wall-to-wall mirrors installed.  When I see these rooms I know right away that they are a home gym.  I can almost smell the sweat.  Not in this room!  This room would make me feel fabulous.

In this room, I can hear Billy Crystal saying “Darling, you look marvelous.”

The mirrors in this room add so much character and depth to the space.  These mirrors appear as if they are a decorative element in the room and not part of the equipment.

This home gym room makes me want to put on my expensive workout clothes, brush my hair, and put on my jewellery just to do my workout!

Magic Mirror

Today I am looking at a magic mirror that is sure to amuse you.  This is the type of project that needs a video to show it off.  Photos would not do it justice.  So sit back, and enjoy this quick video by Matt Ritsman titled, Mirror.

Mirror is an installation created from glass, mirrors, acrylic, wood, steel cable, projection screen, a video camera and video projector.

IT IS FRIDAY!!!

It feels like snow.  It is brrrrrr cold and damp outside.  It is the perfect weather for staying inside with a book, working on a brain teaser puzzle, or playing a board game or cards with friends.

I hope you stay warm and dry and that your weekend is a WINNER!

I’ll see you back here on Monday.

January Books

Today I am looking at new books about glass.

Last year, I started a page on this site for books and videos.  I did a miserable job of keeping adding new books and videos to it.  This year, I plan to have a monthly post featuring new books and videos.

Here are a few new books that are being released in January:

Fire and Sand: Ancient Glass in the Princeton University Art Museum (Princeton University Art Museum Series) [Hardcover]

Fire and Sand

Fire and Sand, Anastassios Antonaras, Publisher; Princeton University Art Museum

Author: Anastassios Antonaras

2013 | Series: Princeton University Art Museum Series

For the first time, this important volume features nearly all of the ancient glass objects in the collection of the Princeton University Art Museum. Collected over the course of more than a century, the objects originate from locations across the eastern Mediterranean region. Taken together, the 509 ancient glass vessels and plaques provide a timeline of archaeological and cultural history from the middle of the second millennium B.C. to the rise of Islam in the 7th century.

An introductory essay by award-winning scholar Anastassios Antonaras summarizes the history of Greek, Roman, and Byzantine glass, with a special emphasis on people—workers, artisans, owners, and vendors—and on the processes they used to create and decorate these artifacts. Conveniently arranged according to production technique, each entry in Fire and Sand features a color photograph, ink drawing, and detailed description.

Bottle Trees, Felder Rushing, St.

Bottle Trees…and other whimsical glass art for the garden, Felder Rushing, St. Lynn’s Press

Author: Felder Rushing

Publication Date: January 15, 2013

Originally meant to trap bad spirits, bottle trees arrived in the U.S. with the African slave trade and first took root in the South. Now it’s a popular art form, a national phenomenon that’s showing up at garden shows, craft fairs and farmers markets. Garden writer and photographer Felder Rushing has encountered thousands of bottle trees and other glass garden art in his travels across America and around the world. In BOTTLE TREES he presents 60 of his favorites, from the backyards of Mississippi to the Chelsea Flower Show. With humor and affection he tells the stories behind the photographs: the history and lore of bottle trees and glass sculpture, and the inspired people who make them.

The first scientific volume to compile the modern analytical techniques for glass analysis, Modern Methods for Analysing Archaeological and Historical Glass presents an up-to-date description of the physico-chemical methods suitable for determining the composition of glass and for speciation of specific components. This unique resource presents members of Association Internationale pour l’Histoire du Verre, as well as university scholars, with a number of case studies where the effective use of one or more of these methods for elucidating a particular culturo-historical or historo-technical aspect of glass manufacturing technology is documented.

Not much new in the video department this month.  I’ll keep searching.  Also, let me know if you have a new book or video coming out that I can include in the monthly book and video posts.

Note:  I am sharing the links for Amazon and Barnes and Nobel as a convenience.  I do not make any money from the links and I ask you to support your local bookstore if possible.

Looking At Glass 2013

Happy 2013!

I enjoyed a brief break from the blog and I am now ready for another great year of Looking At Glass.

I hope you had a wonderful holiday.

During my time away, I thought about all of the things that I want to do in 2013.  It is fun to dream.  I don’t make resolutions…I make dreams.  I suppose it is best described as a form of visualization.  I visualize the things that I want to happen.

In my dreams this year, I’m a completely organized and efficient person with enough time to give each project my full attention.

Here is the 2012 version of me:

This is the 2013 version of me:

So dear reader, this year, Looking At Glass will focus on how we work and the process of getting things done.

I can’t wait to get started…
