Sleepytime Luxury

Today I am looking at sleepytime luxury.

I turned off my alarm clock.

I get up every day at 4:30 a.m.  Last night, before I went to sleep, I turned off my alarm clock.  This morning I slept until 7:30 a.m.  What a luxury.

I think we would all benefit from a day of sleepytime luxury every once in a while.  I promise to be back bright and early tomorrow morning.

Glass Farm

Today I am looking at Glass Farm.

My pal at Nikolas Weinstein Studios, Emily Vassos, sent me a link to a story at Dezeen about Glass Farm by MVRDV.  Emily knows a major find when she sees one.  And, y’all know how I love a good “gasp” moment.

Hang on to your hats, you are not going to believe this one!

Glass Farm is made of glass that is printed to look like an old farmhouse structure.

Today RemBrand developers, the Town of Schijndel and MVRDV complete the Glass Farm, a multifunctional building in the village square. The building with a total surface area of 1600m2 contains shops, restaurants, offices and a wellness centre. The exterior is printed glass with a collage of typical local farms; a monument to the past but 1,6 times larger than life. This concept can be seen as a contemporary response to retro-architecture whilst respecting the public’s wish for vernacular authenticity.

In collaboration with MVRDV, artist Frank van der Salm photographed all the remaining traditional farms, and from these an image of the ‘typical farm’ was composed. This image was printed using fritted procedure onto the 1800m2 glass facade, resulting in an effect such as a stained glass window in a cathedral. The print is more or less translucent depending on the need for light and views.

Tango in 2012

Today I am looking at Tango, a 2012 installation by Guy Kemper.

Yesterday, I received an email newsletter from Guy Kemper (who says email newsletters don’t work?).  The newletter featured some of Guy’s work from 2012.  It is fair to say that I have never seen a Guy Kemper creation that I didn’t absolutely fall in love with.  It’s true!

So, today I would like to share Guy’s Tango project at Children’s Hospital of Alabama, Birmingham.  This project was completed in 2012.

Making a Window From Scratch

Today I am looking at a video, Making Glass for Kevin McCloud’s ‘Man Made Home’.

I came across this video on Vimeo and I have to say that at the beginning, I felt like a bit of a useless slug.  I mean really, who makes their own glass for a window (out in the elements).  But then at the end of the video, I realized that making something that we take for granted, from scratch, can be the most rewarding endeavour. “A triumph.”

Glass Making with Kevin McCloud and KT Yun

The Glass Hub Team took part in ‘Kevin McCloud’s Man Made Home’ with in the Spring. KT Yun and Helga Watkins-Baker took the Glass Hub’s mobile ‘Minimelt’ furnace out on location in Somerset to help Kevin make glass for his project home entirely from scratch …that means from sand!

Improvising with found objects and basic glass making techniques, this short excerpt shows how KT and Helga assisted Kevin in making a series of glass panes to create a unique window for his shed…

Jewel Sconce by Magni Home Collection

Today I am looking at the Jewel Sconce by Magni Home Collection.

I love the simplicity of this sconce.  All of the drama comes from the glass and the optical lens.

The “Jewel” Sconce features a cast glass shade with beveled edge detail and a pair of concave optic lens supported by a pair of metal brackets and backplate.

The Mountain Wall Project

Today I am looking at The Mountain Wall project by Ellen Abbott and Marc Leva, EM Studio Glass.

I read Ellen’s blog, Stuff From Ellen’s Head, on a regular basis.  Ellen craftily writes about her family, life, and work and I always look forward to reading her posts.

Recently, I read that Ellen and Marc had just finished a beautiful glass project, The Mountain Wall.  I’ve mentioned before about how much I like to read about the process of making glass pieces and Ellen wrote about the project process in her blog.  I think that she did an amazing job on both the project and the blog posts.

Floating glass top is supported by four round pegs, and rests 1.75″ above the steel face. 22″ Height, 10″ Round base. Glass: 17″ Diameter. Steel face: 16″ Diameter.

IT IS FRIDAY!!!

Well, it’s about time.  Speaking of time, I’ve had one heck of a busy week, this week.  This has been one of those weeks when nothing seems to work right.  I’ve spent hours and hours troubleshooting website issues this week.  My eyes are crossed from looking at the computer screen for so long.

I plan to escape from work and my computer this weekend.

How about you?

I hope you have an error-free, low-tech weekend and I’ll see you back here on Monday!
