Gardens Under Glass

Well, once again, it is my day off from work and once again, it is raining.  I mean pouring rain.  Not just a little drizzle.

This is really getting to be a pattern.  How am I supposed to get my garden ready for spring planting?  Sooner or later, I am just going to have to put on a pair of boots and work in the mud.

OR, I could always become a terrarium gardener…

With lots of options for glass containers, and the limitless number of options for creating miniature landscapes, terrarium gardening could be a very creative hobby for me.  If the current weather pattern continues, I may have no other choice 🙂

Glass Snowboard by Signal Snowboards

Today I am looking at a glass snowboard by Signal Snowboards.

The fearless Signal Snowboards team likes to push the envelope when it comes to designing snowboards.  “Every Third Thursday” is the name of their video series that documents the creation of a snowboard that is in some way new and unique.

This month Signal Snowboards decided to make a glass snowboard.  The board was fabricated at Vetreria Aurora and tempered at Viraver Technologies.  Were they successful?  Watch the video to find out!

For this month’s episode, Signal Snowboards’ Founder Dave Lee leaves the factory to travel across the sea to an Italian glass factory to create a handmade glass snowboard—the most delicate build to date! The glass snowboard is cut, pressed, tempered, and ever so carefully transported to the slopes. Signal Snowboards Italian team rider Giorgio “Iannino” Morell takes it for the all important test ride at Abetone ski resort in Tuscany. See how this glass artwork performs under pressure—will it slide or shatter?

This Lamp Will Put A Smile On Your Face

Today I am looking at a monumental Flavio Poli for Seguso Murano Glass table lamp.  This colorful lamp is offered by Duo Antiques on 1stdibs.com.

Seguso Vetri d’Arte – Founded in 1933, by the Seguso family and other maestri who had left Artistica Barovier, and eventually joined in 1934 by Flavio Poli. The company produced its signature pieces in the 50s and 60s, the sommerso vase, the valva (clamshell type structure) and the siderali (with large “bulls-eye” murrine on one side). The sommerso vase is one of the styles most associated with Murano, and is manufactured by many furnaces to this day. It is heavy, with a thick base of
clear glass, containing a thin layer of a contrasting color submerged below the main body color. A fine example in dark green and yellow was purchased by Frank Lloyd Wright and kept in his home.

I think the colors of this lamp are absolutely stunning.  This lamp is really a beautiful piece of art.  It puts a smile on my face.

Modules For A Responsive Facade

Today I am looking at a very interesting window video, Modules For A Responsive Facade.

Wow, I am really intrigued by this project.  I like the inspiration patterns and the focus on positive and negative spaces of this project. The window reminds me of a Kaleidoscope, but the shapes are not random.  I think the grey polygons in the window would look amazing with colored or patterned glass.   Don’t you agree?

The project tries to negotiate the visual boundary between inside and outside by making the facade dynamic and modular. The modules engages with the surroundings with ever changing interplay of solid and voids, positive and negative , light and dark, relief and depression.

Mechanical movements also provide a learning opportunity for understanding three dimensional geometric transformations and exploring possibilities of  a rotating polygon.

The idea was to create a reactive building skin. The design uses modular units which can become transparent and opaque based on a sensor input (ex. LDR ,Proximity,Camera ). or using mobile devices.

French Farmer

Today I am looking at French Farmer stained glass panels by Flora Jamieson of The Round Window.

It is my day off from work, today.  It is getting ready for rain outside.  This is a familiar pattern.  It seems to always rain on my day off from work.  Why is that?  My garden needs to be prepared for spring and every time I have a day off from work it rains.  Perhaps, Mother Nature is trying to tell me something.

Maybe I should forget gardening and hang the French Farmer stained glass window panel on my window.   At least that way, when I look outside at the rain, I will smile.

Flora Jamieson sells the French Farmer panels and ALL of her adorable stained glass creations in her Etsy shop, The Round Window.

The John Hejduk Towers

Today I am looking at the John Hejduk Towers, City of the Culture of Galicia, Santiago de Compostela.

Why not start this week with a little facade fabulousness?

The towers were designed by John Hejduk, American architect, artist and educator, in 1992.  The towers were to be built as a part of the Botanical gardens in Belvís, but the project never materialized. After Hejduk’s death, Peter Eisenman suggested to erect them at the City of Culture as a memorial to the author who was a good friend and colleague.

The towers were completed 10 years ago in 2003 however, the Cultural Center construction has not had its difficulties.  According to an article by Giles Tremlett of The Guardian, the Cultural Center was finally opened in 2011 amid criticism regarding the amount of time it took to construct the complex and its cost.

IT IS FRIDAY!!!

I had a very productive week.  I sat at my desk ALL day on Tuesday and at the end of the day, I felt that I had accomplished what needed to be done.  Sometimes you just have to buckle down and be determined enough to finish what needs to be done.

How about you?  I hope you accomplished what you set your sights on.

Happy Birthday to “The Boss.”   She is 4 years old today.

Enjoy your special day, Doodle.

Follow Your Heart

Today I am following my heart…

I saw this picture on Pinterest and followed it to find out more about the owner and where this beautiful glass heart was hanging.

I thought that it would make an interesting Valentine’s Day blog post.  When I arrived at Birgitta’s Glädjekällans Trädgårdsblogg blog, this is what I found…

Melogranoblu Hydra Collection

Today I am looking at the Hydra Collection by Melogranoblu.

Alpha, Hydra Collection by Melogranoblu

Alpha, Hydra Collection by Melogranoblu

I recently saw a picture from Maison & Objet showing Gamma, one of the styles in the Hydra collection of lights by Melogranoblu.  In case you haven’t noticed, chandeliers have given way to pendant groupings.  This lighting style allows for tons of creativity and I enjoy watching designers continue to explore new ways to show and display these groups.  The Hydra Collection has elements that would fit any design style.

The Hydra Collection consists of 13 different style lights: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Stigma, Lambda, Lhasa, Sigma, Omega, Onion, Datura, and Theta.

Blown glass shapes, transparent or sanitized, hanging on a special tubular of coloured metallic fabric create fascinating and articulate bright composition.

The light projected by equipment hit the glass which reflects it in the environment creating effects of really high suggestion. The fixing techniques of singular elements to the ceiling, the possibility of putting the glass on the whole length of the tubular as well as the many combinations of shapes and colours are the essential characteristics of Hydra.
