Mr. Selfridge

Today I am looking at the Masterpiece Classic series, Mr. Selfridge.

selfridge2

Are you watching the Masterpiece Classic series, Mr. Selfridge, on PBS?  I am.  I’m fascinated by the sets and costumes of most period television shows and big screen movies.  I usually have to watch shows like this 2 or 3 times because I am so busy looking at set details that I lose track of the story line.  Thank goodness for my DVR.

Mr. Selfridge captures a period in time that featured craftsmanship and detail in architecture and interiors.

In 1906, Harry Gordon Selfridge travelled to England on holiday with his wife, Rose. Unimpressed with the quality of existing British retaillers, he noticed that the large stores in London had not adopted the latest selling ideas that were being used in the United States. Selfridge decided to invest £400,000 in building his own department store in what was then the unfashionable western end of Oxford Street, by slowly buying up a series of Georgian architecture buildings which were on the desired block defined by the surrounding four streets: Somerset, Wigmore, Orchard and Duke.

– Wikipedia

Did you see the attention given to craftmanship?  If you are like me, you will watch the video and the series more than once to take it all in.

Want to see more?  PBS is currently streaming Episode 2.

Corning Museum of Glass Gallery at Google Art Project

Today I am looking at The Corning Museum of Glass Gallery at the Google Art Project.

Chandelier, F. & C. Osler Manufacturer, Corning Museum of Glass

Chandelier, F. & C. Osler Manufacturer.  One of 1,000 artworks available to see at The Corning Museum of Glass Gallery at Google Art Project

I spent a good part of yesterday afternoon looking at The Corning Museum of Glass Gallery at the Google Art Gallery.  The gallery contains 1,000 artworks by 216 artists.  It is a glass lovers visual mecca.  It is a wonderful source of glass history and inspiration.

IT IS FRIDAY!!!

I’ve had an odd week, this week.  I’ve been productive, just a little bit all-over-the-place with what I am doing.  I’ve found it difficult to stay focused on one task for very long.  It must be a result of all the chocolate eggs that I’ve eaten this week.

“The Boss” just started swim lessons.  Like most beginners, she has a love/hate relationship with water.  She loves to splash but, not too keen on putting her head  underwater.  I thought she might like this fun video for inspiration.

If you have trouble streaming the video, click on the 5m80 link below to go to Vimeo to view.  You will be glad that you did.

Hint:  keep watching until the very end…

5m80 from Cube Creative on Vimeo.

Be brave and make a REAL BIG SPLASH with your friends this weekend!  Then, spend a little quiet time viewing The Corning Museum of Glass Gallery at the Google Art Project.

I’ll see  you back here on Monday,

Patricia

***For the “most innovative project” categories, projects completed between May 2012 and April 2013 qualify.

To learn more about these categories and to submit your nominations, click here. Winners in these categories are determined by a panel of judges.

2013 Glass Magazine Award People Categories

Introduced last year, the Glass Magazine Awards also includes the following people-centric categories: Best Project Manager, Best Production Supervisor, Best Sales Rep and Best Installer. To view candidate criteria and submit a nomination, click here. After determining the finalists in each people-centric category, the editors of Glass Magazine will open voting up to the industry on GlassMagazine.com. Winners will be determined by popular vote.

Best project manager Who is your go-to person when it comes to project management? That person you can always rely on to make sure projects run smoothly, on schedule, and most importantly, on budget? We want to know! Glass Magazine is looking to acknowledge those people who keep multiple balls in the air, as they stay calm (at least most of the time!): project managers who are efficient, reliable, capable of overseeing processes and people, and get the job done. Sound like someone you work with? Then nominate him or her.

Best production supervisor Behind every great team is a great coach. If you have a good team leader at your facility who brings out the best in his or her production staff; continually looks for ways to get the job done better, faster, and leaner; and empowers his or her employees, we want to hear about them.

Best sales rep What defines a great sales rep?  Results is the obvious answer, but what personality factors and skill sets get results?  Here are some of the “definers” we’ve heard—does your nominee fit the bill?  Dynamic, energetic, memorable, driven, a good listener, a good talker, fun to be around (knows a good glass joke!), product knowledgeable, customer advocate, attuned to different needs, gets results for the customer and for his or her company, gets repeat business, not afraid of cold-calling and won’t take no for an answer. Sound like someone you work with? Then nominate him or her for Glass Magazine’s “Best Salesperson Award.”

Best installer  What sets the best installers apart from their peers? Is it their ability to think on their feet and come up with creative solutions to onsite problems? Their commitment to accurate estimating, measuring and no call-back installations?  Glass Magazine wants to know what sets your “Best Installer” nominee apart from the rest.

If you have questions or require additional information, please contact Jenni Chase at jchase@glass.org.

The deadline to submit nominations in all categories in April 16, 2013.

Glass Stoppers in the Garden

Today I am looking at reusing glass bottle stoppers in the garden.

If you find an old glass bottle stopper, you can reuse it as art.  Decorate a garden stake with one and place it as a plant stake or just for decoration.

Unforgettable

Today I am looking and thinking about adding personal details to a room.  Small details in any room will make it unforgettable.  Details give a room personality.  I saw this photo on ECLECchic blog and I immediately wanted to learn more about the home.  Don’t you?

396_1_16g

Take a moment to look at all of the interesting details in this bathroom…sink, mirror, lighting, bench, windows…  Each detail adds more to the story of this room.

Now, imagine this room without all of the things that make this room so memorable.  Can you imagine what the room would look like without all of the small details?  What would this room look like with a generic, nondescript sink, mirror, lighting, etc.  I wouldn’t think much of it at all.

So today, dear readers, be brave and add small (or big), interesting and personal details to your rooms that will make them unforgettable.

Want to see more of this amazing home?  Here are a few photos of the rest of the bathroom and the attached bedroom.  You can also go to ECLECchic for more views of this home.

Dreaming of Summer Showers

Today I am looking at indoor and outdoor showers.  While at least half of the United States is covered in snow, I am thinking of summer’s hot weather. Is there anything better than cooling off in a relaxing shower after a hot day in the sun? Summer will be here before you know it!

I saw this shower head design on Pinterest. Of course, you know me, I thought that if the petals were made of glass, it would be awesome for an outdoor shower!  Don’t you agree?
