Modules For A Responsive Facade

Today I am looking at a very interesting window video, Modules For A Responsive Facade.

Wow, I am really intrigued by this project.  I like the inspiration patterns and the focus on positive and negative spaces of this project. The window reminds me of a Kaleidoscope, but the shapes are not random.  I think the grey polygons in the window would look amazing with colored or patterned glass.   Don’t you agree?

The project tries to negotiate the visual boundary between inside and outside by making the facade dynamic and modular. The modules engages with the surroundings with ever changing interplay of solid and voids, positive and negative , light and dark, relief and depression.

Mechanical movements also provide a learning opportunity for understanding three dimensional geometric transformations and exploring possibilities of  a rotating polygon.

The idea was to create a reactive building skin. The design uses modular units which can become transparent and opaque based on a sensor input (ex. LDR ,Proximity,Camera ). or using mobile devices.

  1. Jean Nouvel did this for the Arab Institute in Paris back in the 80’s. It was much more complex, and much larger. Worth checking out on google images

  2. Great post! Very cool, the application possibilities are pretty fantastic!

  3. Hey Thanks for sharing. I Really appreciate. …..Its an academic project i did in 3 weeks with very limited budget at National Institute of Design India. Jean Nouvel used camera apertures….it was a great project and way ahead of its time… Though my main aim was to make it modular and re-configurable……i want to develop it further…any ideas or comments will be really helpful. ..

    • Abhinav, great work on the project! I love it. I hope it was received very well by your instructor and classmates. I don’t have any ideas or comments other than trying one with colored glass. It would be fun to see how the colors would change and interact with each other 🙂

      Best wishes to you!
