Today I am looking at a video, Making Glass for Kevin McCloud’s ‘Man Made Home’.
I came across this video on Vimeo and I have to say that at the beginning, I felt like a bit of a useless slug. I mean really, who makes their own glass for a window (out in the elements). But then at the end of the video, I realized that making something that we take for granted, from scratch, can be the most rewarding endeavour. “A triumph.”
The Glass Hub Team took part in ‘Kevin McCloud’s Man Made Home’ with in the Spring. KT Yun and Helga Watkins-Baker took the Glass Hub’s mobile ‘Minimelt’ furnace out on location in Somerset to help Kevin make glass for his project home entirely from scratch …that means from sand!
Improvising with found objects and basic glass making techniques, this short excerpt shows how KT and Helga assisted Kevin in making a series of glass panes to create a unique window for his shed…

That was just totally amazing! It looked like they were rolling out sugar candy. I was surprised that the wood they were using didn’t leave pieces of charcoal embedded in the glass too. The finished window looked so wonderful. How great must that be to have those memories of how it was created each time you looked at it—or through it?
Thank you for posting this video. I really enjoyed it.
